The substantial Spalding Number 1 box was a Great Northern structure dating from 1921. It controlled the station and access to it from the south as well as operating the crossing gates on the busy Winsover Road. As can be seen, a footbridge was provided for pedestrians to cross the line when the gates were closed to road users. The box was closed in 2014 and demolished shortly after that with barriers now controlling the crossing. The footbridge has also been removed.
