Built on this spot, allocated to the adjacent depot for a number of years and then after withdrawal returning to the works to be prepared for preservation makes this a locomotive firmly rooted in Swindon! 9400 was a member of a sub-class of incredibly versatile and numerous locomotives collectively referred to as the Panniers after their water tank design that straddles the boiler. 9400 has not turned a wheel in steam since it was withdrawn and is unlikely to do so ever again but it remains a fine example of the class.
