50014 'Warspite' makes a row as it departs from Newton Abbot station leading the 1B68 11.30 Paddington to Paignton service. The gantries above the stock supported lights that illuminated the extensive carriage sidings in the yard adjacent to the station. The sidings formed part of the relatively new and purpose-built diesel depot constructed at the end of steam ostensively to service the diesel-hydraulic fleets that replaced the Kings, Castles and Halls. The new depot itself did not last very long closing the year that this photograph was taken with all servicing now moving to Laira. A large industrial estate now occupies most of the site.
