I am not a particular fan of 'going-away shots' but this particular one of 50038 'Formidable' leaving the Devon village of Whimple is interesting. Leading the 1O06 07.38 Exeter St. David's to Waterloo the Class 50 is passing the entrance to Whimple's good yard that still saw occasional use and was largely intact. Notice the telegraph poles carrying the wires that linked the signal boxes that were still in control of this once very important trunk route. By this stage in 1981, its importance was much diminished with long blocks between signal boxes and with it singled for large sections. It was earmarked for closure by BR but remarkably it survived and is very much on the ascendency.
