The Southern Railway was established as part of the 1923 grouping and operated in that guise until nationalisation in 1948. At its very youngest, when this cast sign was photographed at Whimple station in 1981 it would have been thirty-three years old but at its oldest closer to sixty! There would have been thousands of cast signs of various types all around the country most of which simply disappeared but some would have been saved and now are part of private collections.
