1984 I, along with many others, cursed it as it precipitated the closure of a number of superb mechanical boxes along the Berks. and Hants. route including four in the Westbury area alone (Heywood Road, Hawkeridge Junction, Westbury North and Fairwood Junction). Now some nearly forty years later this box itself has a limited life with it due to close in the next few years as Network Rail (or GBR as it is to become) rolls out its regional signalling centre programme rendering it redundant.
