Andy grabs a 'going away' shot of Network Rail's mobile recording train 950001 as it passes through Frinton-on-Sea as the 08.48 Ipswich to Clacton-on-Sea via most of Essex! It is commonly thought that 950001 is a converted Class 150 unit. However, it was actually purpose-built using the same design as the 150 because that was deemed to be cheaper than designing a whole new unit from scratch. Consequently, it emerged straight from the Class 150 production line at BREL's York facility in 1987. It is based at the RETC in Derby and is used primarily on branch lines where a lighter weight is required on what is often poorer quality track.
