Battersby signal box (NER, 1901) Another lovely North Eastern signal box is seen from the 10.13 Whitby to Middlesborough DMU as we enter the station. It must be a particularly cold location as the box has two chimney stacks indication a pair of coal-burning fires or stoves inside to keep the staff warm in the winter. Notice that in common with a number of NER boxes that it has a gablet or Dutch gable with ventilators that were unique to these boxes.
