Even back in the pre-internet days of 1980, it was still possible to get gen! We would have caught an earlier train to Exeter and then onwards to Westbury but we had information that the 16.23 Penzance to Paddington HST had been substituted by a locomotive-hauled set and gambled on it being a Class 50; our patience paid off! 50027 'Lion' brings the late running train into Newton Abbot station on the up main platform that no longer exists today. This member of the class was one of the last to head north to Doncaster for its much-needed refurbishment in February 1983. Standing in this position today I would see no superb semaphore signals or signal box but plenty of cars as I would be in the station car park!
