One of the most unusual residents of Newton Abbot depot was the former 24054. On withdrawal by BR in July 1976 after a lengthy period of storage, it was tripped to Plymouth Laira during August. After modifications, it took up carriage heating duties at Penzance renumbered as TDB97008 to be moved to Newton Abbot during September 1977. It continued to be a carriage heater but, seeing less work as time moved on, it was transferred to Norwich Crown Point in 1982 after receiving a smart repaint at Stratford. However, due to complaints from local residents about noise during the night, it was moved to March facing a grim future. However, things looked up in 1983 when it was purchased by the fledgling East Lancashire Railway and moving to its new home in the autumn. It remains there to this date in the care of the Diesel Group and is a stalwart locomotive on the line.
