 The superb 1925 Great Western signal box at Aller Junction is seen in the late afternoon sunshine. On a summer Saturday the box would be a busy place controlling various services to and from Paignton as well as those going further to and from the West of England. The trick for down Plymouth/ Penzance workings was for the signalman to clear the down signal before the train departed from Newton Abbot and that he had obtained acceptance from Daignton box ensuring that it had reached line speed when passing the box so it had a good run at Daignton bank that commenced immediately after the junction with some fearsome gradients up to 1:34.
