50012 'Benbow' passes Exeter Middle signal box over the level crossing that is being watched over by the crossing keeper. On a summer Saturday, the crossing keeper would be kept busy ensuring that he struck a balance between keeping everything safe for all users but at the same time avoiding hefty build-ups of road traffic on the approaches to the level crossing, especially on the busy Cowley Bridge road. He was also permitted to allow pedestrians to cross under his directions when the barriers were lowered through side gates. This was the time when us humans had something called common sense! 50012, leading the 10.05 Paignton to Paddington, would stay in service until November of this year before being sent to Doncaster to be comprehensively re-built and emerge on 05.05.81.
