A classic scene at the western end of Exeter St. David's sees 46034 arriving at the head of the 09.18 Paignton to Derby service. Apart from the West signal box to the left, the photograph is dominated by the former GWR water tower in the background. This was converted from one of Brunel's pumping houses used to power the flawed and ultimately ill-fated atmospheric railway. Quite how it was permitted to be knocked down to make way for the Exeter panel box in 1984 is absolutely beyond me. I can console myself that the likelihood of this happening today would be nil!
