Taken from under Holgate bridge York's fine station and Minster can be seen in the background. 40078 leads a rake of eight Mk.I coaches away south with a Newcastle to King's Cross relief. However, there appears to be some debate over this working as the 40 Motherlist site has this down as the 1E70 10.06 Dundee to King's Cross (relief as far as Edinburgh Waverley). Either way, this was in the days when BR had the flexibility to put a relief service together at short notice to alleviate a problem and to support the travelling public - unlike today's totally inflexible railway. It was also a time when enthusiasts could get close to the tracks at Holgate bridge to undertake some serious spotting and, in my case, take some interesting photographs. The tracks curving away to the left are the York avoiding lines.
