390009 'Charles Rennie Mackintosh' passes Roade in lovely early evening sunshine working the 17.23 Euston to Birmingham New Street. Interestingly, just a very short distance from where I am standing is a cottage named Candidia (after George Bernard Shaw's play). It was completely remodelled from two smaller cottages during the end of World War One by the local entrepreneur and renowned model railway builder WJ Bassett-Lowke who was good friends with Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Rennie Mackintosh had a great deal of influence upon the design, fixtures and fittings of the cottage that later featured in an edition of Ideal Home magazine during 1920. Some of the original Rennie Mackintosh furniture from the cottage can be seen today at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery.
