Using split ticketing I managed to reduce the costs of

the fare from Northampton to Cardiff down to a very reasonable £25, this equates to 16pence/mile. They were advanced tickets (booked three days prior to travel) on booked services, I suspect a walk-on anytime single would be considerably more.
