When it opened, it led to to the closure of four other boxes, Bewsey, Warrington Sidings, Warrington Workshops, and the original Warrington Central. In common with the practice of the time, the box was second-hand with the top previously in use at Newton-le-Willows and the lever frame coming from Wigan's Platt Bridge Junction signal box.
