I suspect that on the day my spotting companion and school friend Duncan Copeman, who is seen standing trackside on the left of the image, and I would have been a little disappointed that this working did not produce a class 50 as was more usual. I saw this locomotive just under a year earlier at Crewe Works open day having sustained under-body fire damage. Unfortunately, this pyrotechnically challenged loco. was ultimately withdrawn, numbered as 47713 when it suffered another blaze, this time in the engine compartment in July 1988.
